OUR STORY

Where It All Began

It all started with my first tray of wheatgrass in my tiny studio apartment in San Francisco. I had become interested in the raw food diet and I was spending a ton of money on organic produce. There was something magical about growing my own food. Before long, I was making multiple trips to the hardware store to build a garden that consumed that entire backyard. I started spending all my time in the garden. Some of my friends wondered where I’d gone, until I gave them bags of fresh produce. They became my first supporters. I joked with them, “I want to be a farmer when I grow up!” When I was laid off in 2012 from my last tech job, that’s just what I did. I moved to Lake County and started LifeFood Gardens. Now, our microgreens flourish on 3.5 acres with other produce and flowers. We use unique techniques to make sure they have the highest mineral content so I can share my love of growing food with all of you the way I shared my first home grown food with my friends and family."

Our Practices

Our growing practices are based on the research and work of Dr. Maynard Murray, author of Sea Energy Agriculture. We water our plants with a diluted Sea Salt solution which contains the Full Spectrum of Trace Elements. Every element in the periodic table can be found in Ocean Water. To preserve those elements, the Sea Salt must be sun-dried and never rained on before it's harvested. Rain water, like distilled water, is void of minerals, so if it comes in contact with Sea Salt it leaches most of the Trace Elements from the salt. It's very important to only use Sea Salt which has the full spectrum of elements. Ocean Water is another option if it's harvested several miles offshore to avoid contaminants. Each plant has the ability to take in a different combination of Trace Elements when they are available in the soil or water.

The maximum amount of minerals a plant can take in varies from plant to plant. Even though microgreens and wheatgrass can grow with distilled water (which is void of trace elements), they will have a significantly low mineral content. We make it a point to provide the full spectrum of nutrition to our plants. We grow our microgreens and grasses in certified organic soil and water our trays with a diluted sea salt solution which contains the full spectrum of trace elements. When plants are able to take in the maximum amount of trace elements they are much healthier and much more disease-resistant.
